Who are Lee
Lee was established in 1889 by Henry David Lee in Salina, Kansas. Originally focused on producing dungarees and jackets for workers, Lee became known for its innovative workwear, including the Union-All work jumpsuit in 1913 and its first overalls in 1920. Lee continued to expand, introducing the zipper fly in the 1920s and becoming a leading manufacturer of work clothes in the U.S. by the 1930s and 1940s.
The brand’s transition into casual wear began in the 1950s and 1960s, during which it introduced popular items like the Lee 101J jacket and 101 jeans, which were favoured by modern cowboys and Hollywood rebels alike.
Who are Wrangler
Wrangler’s history dates back to the Hudson Overalls Company, founded in 1904 in Greensboro, North Carolina. Renamed Blue Bell in 1919, the company acquired the Wrangler brand name in 1943. In 1947, Wrangler launched its iconic jeans designed by Rodeo Ben, specifically catering to cowboys. Wrangler gained significant popularity by becoming the official jeans of professional rodeo cowboys and later through its sponsorship of NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt. The brand continued to grow and innovate, merging with VF Corporation in 1986 and expanding its product lines to include workwear and hunting apparel.
Both Lee and Wrangler have had substantial impacts on fashion, particularly in the denim and workwear markets. Lee’s innovations in fit and comfort made its jeans a favourite among various demographics, from workers to Hollywood icons like James Dean. Lee’s expansion into casual and fashion-forward designs helped shape the modern denim industry.
Wrangler’s focus on durability and functionality for cowboys established it as a staple in Western and workwear fashion. Its collaborations and sponsorships in the sports world, especially NASCAR, broadened its appeal and cemented its place in American culture. Both brands have maintained their relevance through strategic marketing and adapting to changing fashion trends, ensuring their iconic status in the global fashion industry.
These brands, now under the umbrella of Kontoor Brands, continue to influence fashion by blending their rich heritage with contemporary styles and innovations (Wikipedia) (Vintage Fashion Guild).
